The blog of J. Ian Ridpath - Canadian oil painter. I hope that you will find this blog interesting, especially if you are involved with or would like to be involved in the fine arts - particularly in the Waterloo, Ontario Region.

January paintings - the beat goes on!
I started a new landscape oil painting this weekend as I am helping out at the AM Gallery at the Milton Mall this month. I hope to have it finished this coming week and will put it up here on line. Last week I did two small 'snowscapes' but wanted to get back and do some larger landscapes.
January (post Christmas rush) has been rather quiet at the Gallery and I was 'painted out' after doing 6 pieces in November/December. The gallery allowed my three panel spaces in the show this month in exchange for some extra 'staff' time. I combined this extra time with some time to start back painting.
For anyone who has not yet been at the AM Gallery in the Milton Mall - please do drop by and see some great original art by local artists.
I understand the Gallery will also be open next month (the sixth one) and they are looking for some new artists to show.

From 2009 to 2010 - all in the day in the life of a retiree
Probably everyone who blogs has their take on 2009 and the New Year 2010 that is upon us. I am no exception. Last night (New Year's Eve) my wife and I went out to dinner and then down to our church for a movie, food and fellowship and to bring in the New Year.
Because of the big change in my life in August (I was let go by my employer after 21 years), I found myself a little at a loss of what to do with the rest of my life. And, although I trust I have much more life to live, life after a 42 year career in electronics is somthing I have been thinking about a lot.
I feel so blessed that at this time I am able to persue my oil painting and web designs and have shown locally at a few exhibits - with some success.
To that end I am really excited about the prospects of doing much more painting and designing and turning my 'hobby' into one small stream of income although that is not the prime objective at this time.
I have really been encourgaed from friends and family in both areas and want to make these activities a part of my 'retirement portfolio' - not a portfolio based soley on money but a portfolio of time, talent and treasure.
Some activities I will do will just be for fun and others for service to the church and community and some as a means of adding to the household 'coffers'.
I want to thank all who have encouraged me and wish everyone a blessed and prosperous New Year.
